How the Nik Silver Efex 8 Colour Filter works, with free cheat sheet!

    ByRod Lawton March 12, 2026March 20, 2026

Like all good black and white photo editing tools, Silver Efex can ‘filter’ the colours in your digital images to translate them into different shades of grey. You can replicate the effect of traditional black and white ‘contrast’ filters, achieving dramatic blue skies with a red filter effect, richer landscape tones with a yellow filter effect and more. Here’s how it works.

Adobe misses a huge chunk of photographic imaging styles like they don’t exist

    ByRod Lawton March 10, 2026March 10, 2026

Depending on who you ask, either Photoshop or Lightroom is the world’s most popular photo editor. I’d be inclined to back Lightroom, given that it’s clearly photography-focused, whereas Photoshop is really a design tool that also does photography. But both miss a huge part of the photography style spectrum – what I’m going to call ‘organic’ photography.

Silver Efex 8 Basic Adjustments: what do they do and how – includes a free cheat sheet!

    ByRod Lawton March 5, 2026March 20, 2026

The Basic Adjustments panel is one of the ‘optional’ Filters in Nik Silver Efex 8. What this means is that if you are building an effect from scratch, you can add it manually from the list of Filters in the left sidebar, or not use it at all. You will find it’s included as standard in many Silver Efex presets, though, and despite being ‘Basic’, it’s actually central to a lot of black and white ‘looks’.

Capture One 16.7.4 update brings negative conversion tools in a dedicated workspace

    ByRod Lawton March 4, 2026March 4, 2026

Digitizing analog negatives is easier said than done. Black and white film poses no problems, but the orange/amber mask of color negative film is a real headache for photo editors, producing strong and unpredictable colour shifts even from one shot to the next. Capture One’s update promises to fix that with concrete digitizing advice and time-saving negative conversion tools.

DxO PureRAW 6 is announced, as DxO’s top-quality RAW processor gets major updates

    ByRod Lawton March 3, 2026March 3, 2026

DxO PureRAW is like a RAW file preprocessor, applying DxO’s now-legendary lens corrections and denoising to produce full-corrected DNG files that can be opened and edited as enhanced RAW files in other programs like Lightroom. And PureRAW 6 fixes a major pain point of its predecessor while adding a brand new and potentially game-changing new feature.

Silver Efex Film Types explained, plus free downloadable cheat sheet

    ByRod Lawton February 26, 2026March 20, 2026

Silver Efex, part of the DxO Nik Collection is one of the best editing tools you can get for black and white photography, but the range of tools available and their interactions can sometimes be difficult to unravel. So here’s a guide to one of the most basic and effective tools of all – Film Styles. It’s often enough, even on its own, to produce rich and satisfying black and white versions of your digital images.

The strange alchemy of Analog Efex Filters, what they do and how they combine

    ByRod Lawton February 13, 2026February 22, 2026

Analog Efex is one of the creative plug-ins in the DxO Nik Collection and it’s a bit of an outlier because, first of all, it was developed by Google and not Nik Software (it appeared during Google’s ownership of the Nik Collection) and secondly, because it can produce the most amazing results from filters which individually don’t seem to amount to very much. I’ll explain.

January 2026 Photoshop update has some good news for photographers

    ByRod Lawton February 4, 2026February 4, 2026

The latest version of Photoshop (January 2026) has a whole bunch of improvements which are not, for once, just about AI. Instead, there are new tools and features for photographers too (even if they are borrowed from Lightroom/Adobe Camera Raw).

It’s the most basic tool ever, and Lightroom doesn’t have it: Levels and Auto Levels

    ByRod Lawton January 9, 2026January 9, 2026

So yes, Lightroom does have a Tone Curve panel which kind of does the same thing as levels adjustments, but you have to drag the black point and white point control points manually for each image – there’s no auto option. And yes, you can use Lightroom’s Auto tone adjustments, but these adjust eight different sliders at once, which is equally annoying. It’s why I keep going back to Capture One.
