Don’t get me wrong. I really value the processing headroom of RAW files, whether they’ve been shot on a phone or a full frame camera, but I’m starting to think the iPhone might be a special case.
10-bit HEIF
HEIF stands for High Efficiecy Image Format, a format which may one day rival or replace JPEG as a 'universal' image file format. The advantage of the HEIF format is that it can store 10-bit image data rather than the 8 bits of JPEGs, which should make it much more resilient to heavy image editing later.
